Enchanting Paiva River Walkways

From 250€ per person

A Journey Through Nature and Heritage.

Immerse yourself in the untouched beauty of the Paiva River region on this serene and unforgettable walking tour. Renowned for its breathtaking scenery and tranquil riverside beaches, the Paiva Walkways invite you to slow down and soak in the wonders of nature.

Recognized as a World Travel Awards winner four years in a row (2016-2019), this trail offers more than just stunning views—it’s a passage through time, rich with over a thousand years of history and home to a diverse array of endangered species native to Europe.

Our adventure begins in Porto, heading to Arouca, a charming town that has gained fame for its spectacular walkways. Here, you’ll explore local delights and visit the historic 10th-century São Pedro Monastery. Take a moment to savor a coffee alongside traditional regional pastries such as Castanhas Doces, Roscas, and Barrigas de Freiras.

Next, we continue to the heart of the tour: the Paiva Walkways. Spanning eight kilometers, this wooden path clings to the left bank of the river, guiding you over rugged cliffs with crystal-clear waters below. The route is gentle, with iconic staircases that weave up and down the valley, providing awe-inspiring views. Your hike begins by crossing the impressive pedestrian suspension bridge, offering panoramic sights of the Garganta do Paiva gorge and the Aguieiras Waterfall—both treasured sites within the UNESCO-listed Arouca Geopark.

The walk concludes at the peaceful Espiunca river beach, where a delicious traditional meal awaits in the nearby village of Alvarenga to replenish your energy.

On the return journey, enjoy a leisurely stop in Aveiro, often called the “Venice of Portugal.” Wander through the city’s historic center, admiring its elegant Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque canals lined with vibrant Moliceiro boats, once used to harvest seaweed. As the day winds down, savor the local specialty, Ovos Moles, while watching a stunning sunset.

This tour is perfect for those seeking to connect with nature, culture, and authentic Portuguese flavors—all at a relaxed, unhurried pace.
