Tour Location

Peneda-Gerês National Park

In Portugal’s far northeast, between Alto Minho and Trás-os-Montes, the Serra da Peneda and Serra do Gerês make up the nation’s only officially designated National Park. This is a place apart, where centuries-old traditions and human life blend seamlessly with the natural world—a harmony still visible in the mountain communities of Pitões das Júnias and Tourém.

The slopes burst with every shade of green, from dense forests to rare habitats like Portugal’s sole holly woodland. Among the wild flora, the blue-violet Gerês lily—found nowhere else—sprinkles color across meadows and valleys. Rugged ridges and cliffs are carved by fast-flowing rivers and streams that tumble into waterfalls before slowing in reservoirs such as Caniçada, Vilarinho das Furnas, and Portela do Homem. The resulting landscapes are nothing short of spectacular.

Wildlife abounds. With luck, you might glimpse the park’s emblematic roe deer or the elusive Iberian wolf. More often, you’ll spot garrano ponies roaming freely over the hills. Traditional farming endures here, with Barrosã cattle grazing and Castro Laboreiro dogs guarding flocks of goats and sheep as they move seasonally between the highland “brandas” in summer and the sheltered “inverneiras” in winter.
