Whether bathed in summer sunshine or blanketed in winter snow, mainland Portugal’s tallest peak offers the perfect backdrop for a few tranquil days immersed in nature.
Rising to 1,993 metres at Torre, Serra da Estrela boasts a landscape of striking beauty, with dramatic slopes and sweeping vistas. Here, the stillness of the heights creates a rare sense of peace. It’s the ideal setting to observe nature closely — from its rich variety of plants and birds to the grazing flocks of sheep guarded by the noble Estrela Mountain Dog, a breed native to the region.
This is also where some of Portugal’s great rivers begin their journey: the Mondego springs from Mondeguinho, the Zêzere from Covão de Ametade, and the Alva from the Rossim Valley — each source surrounded by breathtaking scenery. Glacial valleys, like those in Loriga, Manteigas, Covão do Urso, and Covão Grande, add to the area’s geological charm. In the warmer months, the 25 Lagoon Trail is an irresistible choice, leading you through refreshing, crystal-clear waters and idyllic mountain pools.
