Held every four years in Tomar, the Festa dos Tabuleiros is an ancient tradition that reflects the town’s rich cultural heritage and deep religious roots. During this unique celebration, the entire community comes together to honor the Holy Spirit through a series of events, the highlight of which is the magnificent procession in which young women carry elaborately decorated trays of bread and flowers on their heads. These trays, known as tabuleiros, give the festival its name.

The procession is accompanied by the melodic sounds of bagpipes and the excitement of firecrackers, creating a truly memorable atmosphere. More than a religious event, the Festa dos Tabuleiros is a celebration of community spirit, unity, tradition, and joy.

During the festival, Tomar is transformed by colourful decorations, music, parades, and local gastronomy. The city centre is adorned with vibrant banners hanging from balconies and thousands of handmade paper flowers that decorate the streets. Visitors and residents alike can take part in creating the decorations, enjoy the festive atmosphere, and cheer on the women participating in the procession.

Óbidos

Surrounded by ancient walls, the charming town of Óbidos provides the perfect setting for its renowned Medieval Market, held every July. During the event, visitors are transported back in time as the town comes alive with hundreds of performers in authentic period costumes. The streets are filled with nobles, beggars, muleteers, jugglers, musicians, minstrels, and dancers, recreating the vibrant atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

The main entertainment area, located beside the castle, hosts a variety of attractions, including jousting tournaments on horseback, medieval combat demonstrations, traditional banquets, and a bustling market.

On the second weekend of September, as the warmth of summer begins to fade, Ponte de Lima, Portugal’s oldest town, comes alive for its largest and most celebrated festival: Feiras Novas.

Held in honor of Nossa Senhora das Dores (Our Lady of Sorrows), the Feiras Novas are officially recognised as part of Portugal’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Over the years, the festival has become a renowned cultural landmark, attracting thousands of visitors from across Portugal and beyond.

During these festive days, Ponte de Lima is transformed by vibrant decorations, music, processions, and traditional celebrations. Folklore takes centre stage, with folk dance groups, marching bands, traditional music, and cultural performances filling the streets.
